ABOUT
The Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea (SAPNG) is the national body governing surfing, renowned globally for pioneering a unique, community-centered approach to sustainable surf tourism. Established with the vision to use surfing as a vehicle for social change, the SAPNG manages PNG's vast coastal resources and protects local interests.
-
Core Principle (SMP): The SAPNG operates the Surf Management Plan (SMP), an innovative system that recognizes the customary rights of local clans (the Traditional Resource Custodians) over fringing reefs. The SMP limits the number of visiting surfers per day in designated areas and ensures a surf levy is paid directly to the local communities.
-
Mission: To develop surf tourism sustainably, ensure locals get a fair share of revenue, and maintain uncrowded, high-quality waves.
-
Impact: The SAPNG fosters local development initiatives, conservation awareness, and provides income streams for coastal communities across regions like Vanimo, Kavieng, and Madang.
The SAPNG is connected both to the international sporting world and the PNG tourism industry:
